Cultural Extravaganza is an annual festival that represents and re-presents our distinctive Chinese Singaporean culture to audiences from all walks of life. First launched in 2017 in conjunction with the opening of Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC), it offers an exciting line-up of programmes by the best of Singapore's Chinese arts and cultural groups.

In celebration of SCCC’s 5th Anniversary, this year’s Cultural Extravaganza 2022 presents a series of cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural, and cross-generational programmes. The festival brings arts groups from different disciplines together to present traditional themes from the past in new and modern formats, highlighting the many crossovers between disciplines, cultures and generations.

Representing Cultural Extravaganza

Curious about the colourful character you see here? She is an embodiment of the spirit of Cultural Extravaganza 2022. Let us explain.

The giant “X” on her eye make-up reflects the cross-cultural, cross-generational, and cross-disciplinary elements in the programmes of the festival.

She carries a giant calligraphy brush — which is a hint of some exhibitions that you will get to enjoy! Look out for the Poetic Pandemic exhibition which combines calligraphy, poems and music; and Treasures of the Clan where you can view collections from various Chinese clan associations in Singapore in one place!

Curious about her braid? It is a tribute to the way majies (a group of women hailing from China’s Guangdong province working as domestic helpers in Singapore) used to do their hair, which is presented in the cross-disciplinary Seven Sisters’ Sonata concert.

If you look closer, you will find various Indian elements such as her earrings and bangles, the rangoli badge, and the motif on her jacket. These pay homage to the cross-cultural dance performance Butterfly Lovers, which will be restaged after its sold-out show last December.

There are many other gems, like the badge with the tiger motif representing the art installations from the Funderland, the dragon patterns on her shirt to represent the Chinese mythological elements Mythology RElooked exhibition and xinyao musical Shadow Moon.
